1989''s A Night To Remember by Cyndi Lauper. Had her star coming crashing to back to earth so quickly? Album three and it''s an utter bomb. The movies Vibes, an utter bomb. This album was completely retooled after the whole Vibes debacle. Pushing back the release date. Release dates = relevance. Strike while the iron is hot. Cyndi, one of the queens of MTV. was sputtering. The album cover and the music within certainly did not jibe. Cyndi being her freakish self on the cover, but the songs are pretty straight-forward. There''s a song on here with Eric Clapton on it. Insecurities. Written by Diane Warren and Desmond Child. That''s a sign that alarm bells were ringing, when they call in those two shills. I''m not sure why there was such a feeling of panic but I guess it''s because She''s So Unusual sold 4x Platinum and True Colors only sold 2x Platinum. The air was coming out of the balloon quickly. So pushing this album back a year was like signing it''s death warrant. Cyndi was having all sorts of issues, she was making poor business decisions, she was trying to be that Cyndi from 1985 singing Goonies R Good Enough but she didn''t have those hit songs and her boyfriend David Wolf wasn''t exactly winning any boyfriend of the year awards. Turmoil. And this album is tumultuous. The opening track is just a little blurb that rolls into I Drove All Night. The problem here is that mostly it doesn''t sound like Cyndi Lauper. Her trademark schtick is absent. She sounds just like everybody else and that wasn''t her strong suite. Sure, she has a great voice but the Cyndi on the album cover doesn''t translate into the Cyndi singing these barely-memorable songs. I Drove All Night makes the Best Of compilations because it has too. What else is there from this album? Primitive opens up and it sounds like a Madonna song. And let''s face it, Madonna was stealing Cyndi''s spotlight in a big way. Madonna was the new star. She was the queen of MTV. Cyndi, 6 years in, was nowhere. This is a cool song, but it doesn''t sound like Cyndi Lauper. It sounds like Madonna, which I''m sure was done on purpose. Sweet sax solo. My First Night Without You sounds like Cyndi. Finally. It''s pretty spectacular. She wails here. She sounds incoherent. She sounds like Cyndi. Like A Cat is odd. Sounds like Cyndi. Not written by her. Perhaps things would have gone better if she had written some more of these songs, maybe not. Most of her hits weren''t written by her. She wasn''t a prolific song-writer and that was probably the biggest issue. When you can sing but you cant write you have to rely on others and that''s when the bad song choices happen. This song is a farce. Heading West comes as close to perfection on this album as it can. What a great song. It''s quirky. It Cyndi. It works. The title track is pretty good. Not amazing. This album lacks hooks. Like the albums that came before, there''s nothing catchy. It''s good but not great. I''m sure they thought it was going to blow people away. It does not. Another stab at being Madonna? Maybe. Unconditional Love is another Madonna-esque effort. Subtle. This song works a little better. Insecurities has Eric Clapton on it. Big deal. I think Eric Clapton is a sham. People worship that guy. I could easily name 20 guitar players better than he. Not in the Eric Clapton cult. This song is so underwhelming for a song-doctored effort. Diane Warren and Desmond Child had a hand with Cyndi in making this. Clapton''s squeaky, squalling blues riffs are all over this. Yeah, you can bend that one string, wow. What is the deal with Eric Clapton? I just don''t get it. Totally forgettable song and that was supposed to be the bullet, the bomb, the grenade that exploded all over this album. It was a dud. Dancing With A Stranger sounds like Madonna. I wonder how much influence Madonna had on this? True Blue had been a smash where True Colors had been a hit. Like A Prayer came out in March, this album came out in May. Madonna was rolling. Cyndi was sinking. Her fun little eccentricities were cute but Madonna had turned on the slut switch and was winning handsomely. I Don''t Wanna Be Your Friend is too mature. Look at the album cover then listen to this song. It doesn''t make any sense. This is a good song. Cyndi sounds great. Just doesn''t bowl you over. The outro is just an extension of the intro. That scratchy old-timey radio feel. Like Cyndi was in the bayou in 1927. Been done quite a few times. Overall, this album was supposed to be called Kindred Spirit and was retooled because the movie Cyndi did with Jeff Goldblum was a bomb. Maybe the original was amazing. people made bad decisions in the 80s. Bad musical decisions. Panic seemed to be where this album was born. So it''s choppy and not very inspired. It feels pushed. There aren''t any hooks. It sounds like Madonna on the inside and looks like Lollapalooza on the outside???? What''s the deal? This would signal the end of Cyndi''s short career. She would still go on and performs to this day, but as a novelty. Sad, but there wasn''t enough juice in that engine to keep it running. She surrounded herself by wrestlers and people that made bad decisions. Her simple quirkiness turned out to be her greatest downfall because it was so hard to take her seriously. Especially how she''s portrayed on the cover of this album. Sad. Always have an fondness for Time After Time. I had never heard this album until today. Because it did nothing and Cyndi was DOA after this. I think I saw Vibes. It was terrible. In that period where terrible movies sometimes worked. Especially Jeff Goldblum movies. This one didn''t. This album didn''t. The world turned their backs on the eclectic little misfit girl from NYC. Bummer.

If people would just listen to Cyndi and stop looking at her, they''d hear one of the most talented voices of our time. Many still have the mind set she''s a freak with orange hair and strange clothes. Rather, she has evolved and grown tremendously over the past 20 years.
A NIGHT TO REMEMBER is an excellent example of her work as it grew between SHE''S SO UNUSUAL and today. I DROVE ALL NIGHT and A NIGHT TO REMEMBER were both released as singles, but never got the play they deserved on the air, and the album itself was not a big hit. It should have been. MY FIRST NIGHT WITHOUT YOU is a beautiful song and Cyndi''s unique voice sings with such heartbreak that anyone can relate. Likewise, HEADING WEST and I DON''T WANT TO BE YOUR FRIEND show Cyndi raw and vunerable and beautiful.
Like much of her earlier work, there are a few clunkers mixed in. LIKE A CAT and INSECURIOUS both have sort of goofy lyrics. But we forgive Cyndi because PRIMITIVE and DANCING WITH A STRANGER lift our spirits and make us want to hear more.
She''s good, folks. She''s really good. And she''s gotten better with age.

Usually, when you buy an album and don''t throw it away after the first listening, it means that you liked 2 or 3 songs from that album.
It''s a different story with "A Night to Remember". You''ll love every single song, because each one is truly second to none. "Unconditional Love" is probably the most romantic and sexiest song ever written. "Insecurious" is one of the smoothest rock sogs with totally awesome guitar part. Cyndi''s voice is unbelievably sensual and much better developed since "She''s So Unusual" album. "A Night to Remember" is not a "sweet" album, though. It''s a strong, well-written rock album.
If you''re not yet a fan of Cyndi Lauper, I would STRONGLY suggest you to get "A Night to Remember" first. After listening to this one, you''ll buy the rest of them :)
I would also suggest "Twelve Deadly Cyns" DVD. It has some of the greatest Cyndi Lauper music videos. You''ll enjoy it immensely.

It took me a few listens to realise why I was not connecting with this cd and then it hit me that Lauper is not singing with her drunk baby doll voice on this one and its lost all the charm. Not awful by any means, but I like her goofy persona better than this.

The ORIGINAL Titanic Movie - with electrifying ending

There are only three well-known Titanic movies: the grand Leonardo di Caprio version of 1998 that we all know and love, the easily forgettable t.v. version of 1979, "S.O.S. Titanic" with its awful drama scriptwriting, and this "original" version of 1958. Based on Walter Lord''s best-selling book from 1955 (a comprehensive and highly-researched account that inspired a whole new popular interest in the 1912 Disaster) this movie manages to indulge in detail while losing none of its drama. In fact, the drama after the fatal striking of the ice-berg is both gradually and skillfully built up, culminating in a panic-ridden and electrifying ending that begs the question, "How would I have reacted had I been there?" My only beef with the film is the choice of the quissential british actor of the day, Kenneth More, as its leading star. While Kenneth More''s rather two-dimensional , high-spirited, bullish, pipe-smoking, ne''er be beaten style may have served him wonders in other less serious films, I would have preferred an actor who could have shown real pain at watching 1200 people drown.

Directed by Roy Ward Baker, A Night To Remember is adapted by Eric Ambler from the book written by Walter Lord. Tho only met with a lukewarm response at the box office on release, the film has since received critical acclaim and is highly regarded by Titanic historians for its accuracy. The story of the ill fated voyage of the RMS Titanic is here given a first rate telling by Baker and his crew. Kenneth Moore heads up the multiple cast list {there''s over 200 speaking parts}, but crucially they let the story be the star. This is about that desperate and distressing night, when people of all classes perished due to a number of circumstances. Circumstances that are all fully formed here. They largely stick to the source story and by using research with actual survivors they have kept it straightforward and factual. There''s also no sub-plots to bog it down, there''s time spent with the principals of course, but only enough time to hold our interest when disaster strikes-and decisions are to be made. Given a story with so much detail it''s a major achievement that the film never sags, the outcome of which is a classic movie that''s as memorable as it is poignant. 8/10

They used a real ship in a real water and I especially liked Lightroller. One of Titanic''s Survivors played in the film(a woman, not sure who) and it easily seem to be a high budget production. I could speak a lot about it but perhaps few words could still be powerful. Why not just be sincere and say it was remarkable! The rooms in the ship, and the furniture...Really if you think about it, Movie goers in the 50''s have LIVED to see those kind of ships and their interior, and so it is more occurate with showing of the furniture and machinery than modern films. And more Close to the truth, which is the charm of this film. Must buy!

This was a great, factual British film, set in a distant age when men were generally gentlemen, and it is unspoiled by Hollywood-type romantic sub-plots which are just an irritant in such a profound true story. However, being slightly hard of hearing and requiring subtitles, I was nearly driven to distraction by the fact that the subtitles appeared so low on the screen that only the top half of the words appeared and, struggling to read them, I felt I was missing a lot of the story. Whoever is responsible for placing the subtitles should be shot. This technical error spoiled a great and gritty film performance by many in the excellent cast.
